Ha! I did manage a making of a piece from scratch to putting it up on the internet to selling it to money in bank in under 30mins once!
This took a bit longer (last nights creation...)
'Winter is coming' Acrylic on vintage oil painting, 53x32cms - Inspired by Game of Thrones mainly because the title seemed apt.
I go through phases of making these 'adapted' pieces, they are very self satisfying! This phase is coming to an end though as the pull towards bigger, more complex abstract/illustrative works (like the ones at the top of the thread) is calling again...

First time I've seen this artist - the running ones do nothing for me at all, they are plain ugly, the ones on the red background are amazing though, very Baconesse! Hey j You should Def pop down to elms, his dimensional work at his last show was astonishing, I'm sure they will still have some in house, these new pieces are paintings on canvas so a bit different. Will still look great in person though, Also the painting house used to paint scenery backdrops for the stage so seeing the old racks are really intetesting. I need to see more shows, I make art but don't go out of my way to appreciate others efforts so much. Coming to this forum is giving me a little more insight into what others are doing/liking/collecting.
Last good show I went that really impressed me was 'American art of the 20th century' back in the mid 90's (showing my age...) in London at the RA? Rauschenbergs, Warholes, Lichtenstein, amazing!

Was looking at some vintage paintings on ebay last night to bastardise with the 'Entity' figure - before purchasing I generally download the sellers photo and have a play with it on Microsoft Paint, it's a simple tool (like myself) but it gives me a good idea as to whether I can do what I want to do with said piece, in this case it was a 'yes' so the paintings have been purchased (and I'm waiting to see if I've won others) and I'll have new stock available in a couple of weeks. Woohoo!!

Hi! Terrible at documenting my own work but heres a couple of pics from a piece I sold a while back now named 'Rocktown' - I mainly paint in acrylics and get through an awful amount of masking tape and have burnt out several hairdryers, thats pretty much how I work, building up shapes, almost like building with lego! On the rare occasion I actually plan a piece (especially when I'm adapting an old painting)I take a photo and do a quick mock up using Microsoft Paint, a simple tool but it gives me a good guide as to where to go with a piece. Here be an example... Again, a finished/adapted piece - masking tape, acrylic paint and finished off with 'dot' stickers for eyes and a bit of sharpie pen to outline. It's not as simple as it looks, theres a lot of tidying up done afterwards as the original oil can lift of the canvas when removing the tape, the acrylic not wanting to adhere, sometimes I find myself working to 0.1 of a mm, painting with a scalple to get the line I want!

...and here's a few more random pieces. 'Fantasticolour' - A commission I did for someone that wanted a family heirloom pimped up! Acrylic on a vintage oil painting. 'Bus' - My only multiple edition pieces. I did/sold 5 of these. Card, acetate and stickers on a matt photo. Planning on doing New York yellow cab, London black cab, ambulance and police car runs at some point. 'Woman1' - A simple two piece collage (90's Playboy pic on 80's repro oil painting print). The wife works with a bloke who likes my work, he's also a complete tart! I made this and another piece, texted it to the wife to show her colleague and he bought them on the spot - Focussed marketing I believe they call it...

This is REP1 which found it's home in 'Oberfett' gallery in Hamburg, Germany. ...and REP2 which also went out in that direction. The owner has sold some pieces on but only to people that have agreed he can borrow them back at a later date when the whole sets are required for later showing again.

I really like the vintage pieces - are they the 'Rainbow Entity Project 3'? I'd love to see more of those - something I'd be very interested in owning if some are available They are and some are, there are loads more (sold ones) on various pages on my website www.jamesoliverart.netI tend to do them in batches, REP1 (12 pieces) and 2 (10 pieces) both sold to a gallery in Hamburg, lots of individual (30?) ones are scattered across the world, think I've done and sold 60 in total. They are proving quite collectable and from an artistic point of view are very satisfying to do when they work out! People like the fact that they are all 'one offs' and I don't do print runs. Was looking at killing the whole series off and doing one last 'Gold' one (a bit like a rare Pokemon card) and putting it up for auction but there's still life in it, I'm very aware I don't want to milk it dry though!

It's full of stars' (the acrylic painting of all the 3D cubes), That's me summer holiday paid for. Entered myself for the Turner Prize yesterday also, someones got to win it I guess, worth a punt, if you don't ask you don't get and all that!

Nice ?, kinda reminds me of my sons Minecraft game too Agreed, It is similar. I've been painting like this on and off for 20 years, it's what came naturally and its a nice way to build images (I use a lot of masking tape!) I think Lego, early vector graphics (like from the original Star Wars arcade game) and possibly Nintendo64 games are my main style influences if any...

Hello!
New, here's what I do, easier just to show off some key works from my last four years of making and answer any questions later if anyone asks, cheers x
I mainly paint in acrylics, here are three of my favourites, sold and off to new homes...
Three Figures and a Tree
Earthbase4000
'My God! It's full of stars'
I adapt old paintings, sticking 'Entities' in them, some say these are a commentary on surveillance, others a representation of isolation, to me they are monolithic creatures, portrayed as simply and effectively as possible. These are my moneymaker, sold 50 to Germany in the last year and a half, I don't know why Germany in particular? They are so much fun to make...
Here are 'Pub', 'Death in Chilham' and 'Mary(9monthsBC)'
I'll leave you with those for now, loads more at www.jamesoliverart.net
Thankingyou x

Hello
First post, argh!!!
I'll do you a brief synopsis of what I do - Kicked out of the RCA mid 90's, got a proper job, started painting again 4 years ago and thanks to a combination of pretty well received work, dedication and the wonders of the internet and its global reach I'm doing ok out of. I don't/can't categorise what I do, but people who like and follow street art tend to be interested in what I produce, but then so do children and old women. I've done street art pieces (currently have one on St Georges Walk, Croydon as part of the Rise Gallery initiative) but mainly I 'graffiti' vintage paintings, build dioramas and paint 'epic, abstracted illustrations'...
Best off just show you some work -
Right, I've got a show on in Croydon, it's at Matthews Yard (off Surrey Street), It's my 5th show, most others have been joint efforts or more tied into galleries where I've sold/displayed works.
Here are some of the 'Epics' as I call them, acrylic pieces based on creation/destruction/gods, that type of stuff!
A few of my (Centaur) Dioramas...
Photos from the 'Portrait of the artist with a box on his head' series...
The only clear photo I've got of some of pieces from 'Rainbow Entity Project 3' along with a random drinking tea) Adapted vintage paintings - I've got past the point of explaining these to people, people tend to take from them what they want, be its images of isolation, surveillance, monolithic aliens, blatant destruction of a long dead amateur artists creations... I've done about 70 of these pieces, most of the previous ones found there way to a couple of collectors in Germany...
Whilst I mention Germany, also currently got a show on there, one of the figures from the above paintings is here in full blown 3D! Another painting (Earthbase4000) can be seen in the background.
More stuff can be seen at www.jamesoliverart.net
Enjoy
Thankingyou x
