Got it. - Share of households owning gun between 1975-2010 at all time low, down 17pp. - Over the same period though population went from 215 to 310 million so absolute number of guns in circulation can still be on the up and up (depending on how many guns each household has on average over he same period but this probably had not shrunk)

@notmatti was not implying no guns around. Was more that the ban guns concept is popular but I think the problem is deeper than just ban guns. Similar to young Brit Muslims blowing up tubes etc. those that wanna do it will regardless of legal or not etc. note hate the NRA and all it stands for but .....they are not the only oroblem

Guns don’t kill people. People who say “Guns don’t kill people” kill people. With guns.

This is just as much a mental health issue as it is a gun issue. Guns just make it easier.

This is just as much a mental health issue as it is a gun issue. Guns just make it easier. So in the many many countries similar to the U.S. where these shootings do not happen, is it because they have less mental health issue or less access to guns ? I get your drift but it doesn't work honestly. As was said there is hardly parity between the issues although both played a role here

Where doesn't it happen? Happened in Europe, Asia, Africa en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rampage_killersNot as frequently admittedly however that is yes partly to do with gun availability but I would suggest there are also other factors as well. It could also be that other areas will see an increase in the future. I would doubt for those commenting that any sane person does this so there are obviously mental issues or pressures for those that commit these acts. That's not an excuse for them but certainly I would also agree and suggest that mental health issues are v high up there as part of the cause.

If everybody there was carrying a gun, they'd have been better equipped to defend thmselves. So the solution is more guns. Guns for everyone. i heard an american priest or chaplain or something similar say exactly that on tv So very surreal

For gun nuts, there are 2 options. 1) All the guns they already have. 2) More guns than they already have.
Fewer guns is just not an option. Not even close.
Fewer guns, Zac. No guns at all.

I hear the Obama chap has mentioned it doesn't happen in other countries.. He went as far to mention the uk in his speech.
Thanks for that , I wonder do Americans listen , do they actually care , do they have any control ...
It would appear not in a few cases , more full them.
Still I haven't been over for a few years , know plenty of good friends over there , and do think this is due to happen again within the next few weeks.
Takes a while to change things over there , eh ? dunblane and hungerford was enough for us over here....
Is America a democracy ?
( oh and yes , not sure if the uk is at times.. I know.. But generally it's ok... )
NRA , says it all.... ! bigger than democracy ?

zak is a christian, anti abortionist, likes rand paul and is pro guns.
i can see a contradiction between every one of of those positions held, yet Zak is hardly unique.

Has anyone seen Michael Moore's BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE? Really, really interesting. Not so recent but just as relevant as ever. Watch.

Fewer guns, Zac. No guns at all. There was a student that was an ex-vet who was carrying a concealed pistol (he had a concealed carry permit) who said he did not engage the shooter but instead stayed with his classmates and protected them. He said he did not engage becuase he knew the swat team would be arriving ASAP and without knowing their timeline and them not knowing that he was trying to help, it would only make the situation worse (i.e. That there was more then one shooter, or that he was the gunman). So people onsite with guns did not think that it would help the situation.

like so many problems in modern society, this is a result of fractured societies, of not enough compassion for your fellow human, of services not helping those that need help. slowly slowly we're all pushed towards believing that private is best, that helping others (truly helping others, through public institutions ) is a sign of weakness. that's it best to press like, or dig into your pocket for some change, rather than believe in nationwide structures that make a difference. It's never violence, it's never more barriers, it's never pushing people out of their homes. there are not easy conclusions, not easy solutions, ho hum.

Jeb Bush reaction to the shootings "Stuff Happens" Donald Trump reaction to the shootings " These things happen"
""We're in a difficult time in our country and I don't think more government is necessarily the answer to this," Bush said. "I think we need to reconnect ourselves with everybody else. It's very sad to see. But I resist the notion, and I had this challenge as governor—look, stuff happens. There's always a crisis. The impulse is always to do something and it's not necessarily the right thing to do."

What can you say that hasn't been said a million times before? If things aren't changed then things won't change.
I thought Obama's statement yesterday was probably one of the most heartfelt I've ever seen from a president.

Not funny or anything, but it's 20 yrs on from the Dunblane shootings on the 13th March 1996. Time for reflection perhaps. Plenty of ongoing debate. Do we turn schools into Fort Knox? Do we have armed security guards? Do we have metal detectors? Do we make a statement by saying fuck everyone who goes on about toolin' up schools and shit? I remember my disbelief on watching the news with my parents. I was only young but even so ...
My local secondary school recently erected fencing all around. It's got a shit load of ground to surround, only 19 and a bit yrs to take effect?
I'm an atheist but I wish peace and love on all, and hope that those affected by Dunblane can find the peace to move on. The country felt your loss and the tragedy will live on in our collective consciousness.
