here's some pics from the Ellis Island installation. I know JR can be divisive, but I found the exhibit truly moving - one of the most spectacular things I've ever witnessed/experienced, especially since both sides of my family came through these very doors in the island's heyday.

as a funny side note, we were the ONLY people on the tour there to see the JR works (technically, it's the "hard-hat" behind the scenes tour, to parts of the museum not open to the public.. we had to sign medical waivers and such).. everyone else wasn't even aware of it and were very confused

mental asylum:

we weren't allowed to see the centerpiece up close.... too much of a safety concern, even with signing the disclaimer

Popped along to the Laz show today and really enjoyed the work having been pretty unmoved by JRs work from looking at it online. The large monochrome works on wood featuring the ballerinas were a particular highlight for me but the Ellis Island pieces were also quite haunting. Less keen on the people in dot suits making up eyes and the colour shots in general though.
Def worth a visit if you can.

TRUE OR FALSE: JR has more to say than Banksy?

not to compare two artists, but I haven't seen Banksy's "voice" evolve much. same old stuff as always (which I love), but it's hard to glance through someone like JR's new book and not see an artist who is out there actually doing something about the problems he sees, rather than just raising awareness with spraying quotable quips. yes awareness is important but at this point, is anyone who would be a fan of banksy not already aware of the problems he's referencing?
