I was awarded, for the second consecutive year, a "Highly Commended Artist" award at the Stencil Art Prize (the biggest Stencil Prize and one of the biggest stencil events worldwide). Last year the other two recipients were Tierra Boo and Monstfur (2015 Winner). The show, in which the finalist pieces were exhibited, is now over. I wanted to see if any of you is interested in buying "Retorno". It is a 4-layer hand-cut stencil painting, based on an image taken by 360º (my father). It took me more than 1000 hours to cut the presumably hundreds of thousands holes that form the image. So far, I have painted five versions using the same stencils, but the series could grow to a maximum of 14 unique pieces (because the smallest holes get blocked and won't last longer and because I prefer not to do big series). Therefore, the painting is not numbered, but it is signed on the back. It is now in Sydney (at Ambush Gallery), so it would arrive rolled, due to its big size. Description:"Retorno" is the portrait of a Mam woman met by my father in Guatemala, after her return from a long asylum in Mexico. Her face tells a story that goes beyond this grandmother's individual participation and survival during the Guatemalan Civil War; it tells the story of a people and its heroic resistance against oppression, exploitation, marginalization and discrimination. Because they were, we are. Details:Aerosol, Acrylic, Ink on Canvas 148cm by 98cm (58'' x 38.5'') Price: £1100 + Shipping Images:

Amazing stencil work. This is lovely. Thanks, alittle. I love the pieces I have seen on your posts, so I take your words with special happiness. my wife doesn't believe me that this isn't a photo sɐǝpı ɟo uoıʇɐɹǝpǝɟ, that is why I tend to post the image together with the one that shows the details (where you can also see that the colors are only 4). The same tends to happen when you see the painting from very close or from a distance of 3-4 meters (when the tonalities start to "melt"). I hope it is a good "quality". I have been trying to make my cutting less rigid (as the stencil medium has some clear limits and tends to be too solid), so I hope not to be achieving the opposite.

Hope you get it, treweman. I keep coming back and looking at this. All the details hammered out, and I just sent the payment. Knock on wood. Should arrive by the middle of next week. I'm excited. Taking my art collection in a new direction. Oh, and did I mention how easy it has been to work with Tinku.

I want to thank everyone at NBF for their kind words and enthusiasm. Everything has developed very smoothly and it is a pleasure to do things this way. I'm looking forward for the painting to arrive and to read treweman 's opinion on the piece.

Thanks a lot, Aza. It is indeed cardboard, ZeBigBoss. It is a bit harder to cut, but it lasts for longer and I find it easier to paint without having undesired under-spray than when using normal paper.

Retorno has arrived in an absolute monster sized tube, and is at the framer waiting to be stretched and then framed. I didn't take any new photos as it really needs to be stretched first, but it is an absolute beauty. Both Paul (gallery owner and my framer) and I thought that there might be gold leaf in one of the paint layers. In the natural light that filtered threw the front windows of the gallery, there were obvious yellow/gold reflections in both the upper right and lower right on the canvas. And damn if it is nigh on to impossible to recognize this as a stencil. Even up close, the colors are seamless and crisp.
On a different note, I have to report yet another gallery that apparently doesn't know how to handle art. The canvas was rolled, but the edges were folded under (not flat) before being rolled. This will have a happy ending, as there are no creases or cracks in the paint (at least none that we could see), but there were numerous folds and wrinkles in the canvas, particularly all around the edges. Oh well, that's why I use the best framer in town. I will post several photos when Retorno is ready to head home (or maybe my college office). It should be a show stopper when displayed.
