I know it's been done to death...but not here. By top, I mean significant, influential and likely to be remembered for decades to come.
Who would make the cut in your eyes? To throw some names out there:
Banksy Os Gemeos KAWS Invader Shepard Fairey
Jose Parla? Barry McGee? JR? Faile? Swoon? Adam Neate? Eine? Paul Insect? Escif? Retna? Vhils? Bast? David Choe?
Please, share your thoughts!

The better question is who will be the breakout artists of this year? I've got my picks. Making a thread now....

Same old list…and a lot of wishful thinking
Wouldn't it be more interesting to agree on some criteria that seem to be good indicators, and see who passes the test
- Global reach (some artists very famous on only one continent will struggle, see Japanese real estate crash and impact on art market in the 90s) - Individual message / artistic process - Recognizable Iconography (I think that is the word I'm looking for e;g;, Shep's OBEY) - Control of output (although Warhol would certainly be a good counter example)
That would give a new perspective to the list I think and some grounds to establish how realistic it is
As an example, as much as I like Blek, he would never make the cut of enough criteria to still be around and valued in 15 years time, apart for the die hard stencil art fanatics As much as I love Daleast and Roa, i don't see them having enough points to fly sky high at auctions in 10 years from now when there murals are erased I am not a huge fan of Kaws, but for sure he will have all the criteria working for him and undeniably he will be here for a while

i like your thinking notmatti, Global reach is really important. I'm hoping all the above artists who we follow, start to evolve and eventually explore different areas, just like Kaws. will be interesting if any of them produce an world renown iconic piece, they are all young so i hope so. well apart from blek

When I see names like Conor H, Retna, even Dolk and to some extent Eine...i really not sure they have their chapter in the big book of art, although their current success and talent are undeniable. alittle ´s list is spot on i think. The first few are in a league of their own, they have already written a page in art history and now need to make sure if doesn't get erased. For the rest there is still a long ways to go It also makes sense to put this "urban art" in the context of the global art market and big collectors, because that leaves even less space to be remembered, and raises the bar quite significantly for all the criteria I mentioned. Finally, I am hoping that pretty soon we will see the arrival of the "new Banksy", and none of the guys on these posts are him. Like the old Banksy, the new Banksy will do something completely different, totally new, and take the art world by storm, get people to see art and think about it in a new way... When that happens a lot of the above mentioned artists simply living in the wake of a current popularised and officialised by Banksy, will just disappear.

Urban artist, an artist who's brought the street into the gallery and made cash from the transformation ?
Certainly makes it easy to weight the list that way.
Higher eschelons takes care of itself with shep, kaws, banksy,
Lower down the list you've got some true tripe raising its head such as brainwash etc
And some greats wouldn't even be mentioned ie. Blu, Escif, Sainer, Bom k etc

As it stands i do agree to a degree The problem with the new art sensation, The celebrity world is so media based now, i have a feeling the next world renown artist will end up marrying a kardashian and painting the portrait of baby north west lol
mainstream here we come

I have a bit more faith in the future !
Luckily the artists who did a few stencils and play the anon card (bambi, pegasus) might appeal to the Kardashians of this world and their followers, but will disappear with them and their tacky houses.
They have only demonstrated that it takes a bit more than some cardboard, some paint, and a PR team to be relevant as an artist...and thank fuck for that
Agree that social media will play a huge role, but Banksy already got that. Without social media BOTI would have been a flop

it's pretty easy to see who will be remembered, they're the ones that have inspired the ones further down the ladder. the pioneers. the guys and girls who are currently having the museum shows and being picked up by the blue chip galleries.
the one that always intrigues me is BLU.
he does not care about his CV. he hasn't had a gallery show in years (was the last 2007 @ outsiders?!). he stays true to his roots, painting walls. big fuck off walls. the street is still his gallery.
it's refreshing to see an artist who has stayed true to his core beliefs, whilst many others around him flock to sell new prints and hire publicists and agents to manufacture a market for them.
if he wanted, he could be at the very top of the tree, and he deserves to be there. a huge talent.
it still surprises me that his prints are still available from POW + studio cromie, especially considering some of the other 'art' that gets swallowed up.

Huge fan of Blu and I hope he gets remembered. He is definitely one of the most underrated artists out there.
All that being said, I'm not that keen on his print choices, so I'm not surprised that many are still available.

And headquarters is also a great quality print. But I agree, some of the releases have been an odd choice.

denada, I also do not wish to do business with Studio Cromie, so that doesn't help. Otherwise, I would probably grab a Rennes and Il Nulla. Have a Demos on the way, which I am quite excited about.
