Coinciding with Measuring Land and Sea – Oliver Jeffers' upcoming solo exhibition at Lazarides Rathbone in November – the artist will be presenting a one-off "In Conversation" event at the National Portrait Gallery on the evening of the 20th of November to discuss his Dipped Paintings Project.
In 2012, Jeffers embarked on an ambitious artistic pursuit to explore simultaneously the practice of portraiture as well as time's confounding effects on memory. Submerging his carefully rendered portraits into vats of brightly coloured paint over a series of performances, these "dipped paintings" vibrate between creation and loss. The portraits are neither seen nor photographed prior to their dipping, so the sole documentation of the unobscured pieces are the memories and testimonies of those present the moment they are lowered into the paint.
Ticket holders to the event will also be entered into a free prize draw to win one of five places at an exclusive dipping performance which will take place in central London at 20.00 on Tuesday 17 November. Tickets for the In Conversation event are priced £8 (£7 concessions and Gallery Supporters) and are on sale now from The National Portrait Gallery.
