Here is an article I found on The Guardian about a NGO taking out JR's vinyl roofs from Kibera and auctioning them at Julien's !

Some will think stealing art is disgusting... It may but then what you see as art is just a (leaking) plastic roof for the people living there; and yes, these old leaking roof need to be replaced with new stuff !! I admit it is sad to see the art gone but it was installed for a purpose at request of Kibera (who claimed that paper/paste up has no use and that artist should come up with a useful idea) and years after, these aren't useful anymore.
Let alone the all stealing controversy (and we all know Julien's is good at this), I am utterly astonished by the reaction and reply by JR.
a) First, he is saying that the picture of the vinyl roof auctioned at Juliens is not from his but from an unknown local photographer !!! First, I don't know any photographer here who did this (let aside the funds to do it). So I check on the auction website and indeed the shot in the eye is not the same one than the one by JR... but it is similar (to me, it looks like it is a local photographer who took part of JR team and vinyl were printed by JR team). If I recall correctly, JR team went numerous times to Kibera to add vinyl roofs and lot of press article spoke about it.
So to cut it short, JR is clearly lying so that the guy auctioning the vinyl roof get nothing. If not, it is underlying that most of the stuff that press media relayed as JR's work is in fact not from JR
b) JR said "[he] remains committed to the neighbourhood, yet he says that the monetising of his work could lead him to pull out." That's the funniest statement ever, to pull out of what exactly ?? Because since 2009, I haven't seen anything going on here. JR made lot of promises to Kibera people and he never opened the art center he promised to the people there (too busy opening a studio in NY and a printing factory in Paris). He knows very well the women photographed there because they were all invited at a party in July 2010 (with the participation of the French Embassy) in which he gave signed books to the women of Kibera (I have some pictures, some faces are like "why do I get a book, is this useful ?"). Since then, nothing...
So saying he remains committed to the neighbourhood is a lie. And warning people that is gonna pull out is just a joke !!

I don't support the act of the NGO. That's my personal opinion, it simply because NGOs are known for not doing much and spending lot on consultancy, etc.
BUT... and there is a big one... Despite misspendings and al., NGOs are obliged to publish their books and their financial expenses/status to others, it is call transparency.
NOW go ask JR for numbers (money collected for "Inside Out" especially and expenditures to "change the word"). You will see how transparent JR is !!
Please share your though.
