just been on an amazing trip to Beijing where zi visited one of if not the most important Chinese Contempiary Art collection. i visited a couple who own a building that is half a house and the other half is really an Art museum/gallery but not open just theirs. He is an artist and years ago back in the 90's when no one was interested in Chinese Contempiary Art and the couple of Contemp Museums that there were; were closing. This guy bought their collections. shortly after the Art market for Chinese Art exploded and although he has bought and sold Art since and has a gallery etc he has never sold any of these bought collections. the area he has and the space is just massive with amazing works. When you see the pics of the space below this space is storage which I did not see but it has from what I gather tons of works in. Just amazing even his dog has 3 Yu Minjun sculptures to pee on it just off the scale. The second pic to last of the work by Ju Minjun is a collection piece of 9 related pieces he only has ever done 2 in this style and the other has been broken up so an amazing rarity. The last piece is called "From the darkness into the light" and caused major contraversey when it was painted and is still not allowed to be published as it challenges the state. Although the game has changed in China it is still regarded sensitively so this is actually a rare viewing of it simple though it is but very effective. some pics of some of the works which are really the foundation of the Contempiary art movement in China and part of probably the most comprehensive collection of works anywhere so was a real honor to see.
The 555 piece is a really early piece by Wang Guangyi my personal favorite Chinese artist and that is s lovely piece. The Bust will find you a name is actually a modern piece not part of the original collection and they had scruple in their hous part but just loved them so one is in. Will look up the name and drop it to you.
The busts are by an artist called Yang Maoyuan these were in their house but I just loved them and are not from the orig museum collection. They are recent pieces Here is another that they have. Think they work or know this artist well as they have some paintings by him as well.

That's just Bizzare the only thing zi would assume is that local Kenyan' s would not pay for the space and so they bought it and may also have bought the space cheaper in Kenya than they could in China. very weird what ever way but have come across this in trade fairs before. There are a lot of agent and pavilion add one for Chinese exhibitors at international shows in all industries so I assume for them it's just a cost deal. For the Kenyan organizer he just needed to fill the space to get his agency commission from the show organizer so did not really care too much. tis strange mind!!

You are right John, the fact that Kenyan institutions can't organise themselves and pay for space is a great opportunity for Chinese exhibitors... This said, I think the culprit here are the organiser of the Venice Biennale because allowing other investors to take over a State pavillon and selling art that is not related to the Pavillon is odd. Imagine if this is done for all States, what a mess !!
