Hello Friends. Some of you that know me, know that I've been going through cancer treatment for the last year, most of you do not. I've been diagnosed with a particularly nasty type of cancer which is linked, like many cancers - including cervical, mouth, throat, and, many others - to infection with HPV (Human Papillomavirus). Approximately 80% of the general population will come into contact with HPV during their lives. HPV infection is responsible for at least 5% of all cancers. These cancers can been prevented by vaccination. HPV is a gender neutral disease. In the UK, teenage females are routinely vaccinated against HPV as a safe guard against cervical cancer, these vaccinations are currently NOT available to teenage males. A gender neutral infection requires a gender neutral solution!! There is a petition online to encourage the UK government to introduce a gender neutral vaccination programme which would both improve the effectiveness of the vaccination for females, but, would also give protection to males against a wide range of HPV related illnesses and cancers. www.change.org/p/jeremy-hunt-uk-health-secretary-introduce-hpv-vaccination-for-boys-to-stop-many-preventable-cancers-3Please sign up, and, promote this petition via any means you have at your disposal (FaceBook, Twitter, InstaGram). Your kids lives could depend upon it. Thanks for reading. UmBongo

Thanks for posting this, I work within the health sector and I have to confess that I really wasn't aware of the details of male hpv and the links you've provided make for interesting reading. Other than the 'herd protection' argument, I wonder what the justification is for NICE to sanction the vaccine for females only? Is it that there are a lot fewer males affected? As this appears to be a weak argument. I wonder too why NICE is excluding several male cancers in their QALY formulas to justify female only hpv vaccines. This could be a key area for lobbying, as ultimately NHS services are based on these formulas and until they are changed to reflect the breadth of cancers it will be difficult to change policy. It would be interesting (in a geeky stats way) to see the data with these cancers excluded and added to the equation.
Most importantly of all best of luck in your recovery umbongo and hope you're on the mend really soon.
