Jesus Christ North Korea sentences US student Otto Warmbier to 15 years hard labour for stealing posterwww.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/north-korea-sentences-american-us-student-to-15-years-hard-labour-in-prison-for-stealing-a-poster-a6933756.htmlNorth Korea has sentenced an American student to 15 years' hard labour for trying to steal a propaganda banner from his hotel. Otto Warmbier was convicted on charges of subversion, in a move which has showcased the secretive and unforgiving North Korean regime and futher deteriorated relations with Washington. The student, from Ohio, admitted trying to steal a North Korean banner with a political slogan on that had been hanging from the walls of his Pyongyang hotel, according to CNN. In a statement to a press conference in February, Mr Warmbier said: "I committed the crime of taking down a political slogan from the staff holding area of the Yanggakdo International Hotel. "I apologise to each and every one of the millions of the Korean people, and I beg that you see how I was used and manipulated." Crying in a broadcast video, he said he had been "lured by the United States administration to commit a crime in this country." It is not known whether he was coerced into giving the statement. He said he had wanted a banner from the totalitarian regime in east Asia "as a trophy" for a member of a church group he attends. According to an official who spoke to CNN, the church member allegedly encouraged Warmbier to take the poster so as to "weaken the ideological unity and motivation of the North Koreans", promising him a car in return for his efforts. But no evidence of such a church group or member has emerged. The issue has raised questions around the risk to American tourists travelling in the country of being used as political pawns by the regime. Tensions with Washington further escalated this week after leader Kim Jong Un warned his country had a long-range missile capable of obliterating Manhattan in New York City. "If this H-bomb were to be mounted on an intercontinental ballistic missile and fall on Manhattan in New York City, all the people there would be killed immediately and the city would burn down to ashes," reported state-run outlet DPRK Today. The UN Security Council voted unanimously in early March to implement harsher sanctions against North Korea to starve it of money for its nuclear weapons programme.

Aye, I read this a while ago. I feel for him but, fucking idiot. Don't land your plane in Red Square, don't smuggle drugs in SE Asia, don't put your hand in that big log in Flash Gordon. Avoidable pain...

This is a reprehensible and appalling regime. I love the art as art, but the DPRK is no laughing matter. Been a couple of times to scavenge posters and the latter jaunt was summer and chock full of gap gear rich fucks looking to spice up their instagram with a bit of conflict tourism. Lolz. here I am on the DMZ gibing the peace sign in front of that bust of the original kim. its pretty binary in NK - if you fuck up publicly , two things can happen
a) you get thumped- like this poor stupid foolish sap got b) someone else gets thumped - and their family and their kids and their descendents- but you will never know anything about this
I witnessed some fucks using their smuggled phones on a trip to record what as going on - you had to hand over your mobiles when you enter at PY airport. Some local party member witnessed this and remonstrated with the guides. the phones were handed across by the fucks for the rest of the trip. The guides are all positively vetted party members and being a guide is a seriously privileged and delicate position. I cannot imagine the guides are still guides several years on.The fucks flew out as scheduled 2 days later.
As I say, I love revolutionary art. the regime behind it is horrendous.

I couldn't help but think they came to point and laugh, with little to no empathy or depth in understanding what they were witnessing

will be in shenyang for a few weeks very soon, will see if i can get across to NK to pick up some posters for my collection. I may be able to get a few for sale to assist with the cost of my trip. they will not be as cheap as the last lot. if you are up for it, drop me a pm to discuss. If you are US based, be wary that these are sorta illegal these days. cheers
