A new Banksy artwork will be unveiled today at an exhibition protesting the world’s largest arms fair. The piece, entitled Civilian Drone Strike, will be auctioned off at 6pm on Friday, with proceeds going towards Campaign Against Arms Trade and human rights group Reprieve. The reserve price is set at £10.
The auction is part of Art the Arms Fair, a week-long exhibition coinciding with the Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) conference in Docklands, which opens tomorrow.
Around 100 artists including Peter Kennard, Guerrilla Girls and mashup duo Cassetteboy have donated art to the exhibition in Poplar’s SET gallery.
“This arms fair is violent, negative and ugly,” organiser Sam Walton told the Recorder. “Art the Arms Fair is about creating a space for something that is peaceful, positive and beautiful, and we think that’s what people in Newham want to see in their borough.”
He added: “Banksy’s work is world renowned and always razor sharp and topical. Civilian Drone Strike is such a powerful statement against everything that events like the DSEI arms fair stand for.”
A DSEI spokesman previously told the Recorder the conference catered only to legitimate arms sales “within a well regulated environment”.

Really like this one! Great work! Don't really get how the drones are made/connected to the framed piece...?

sorry but nobody can convince me there hasn't been a change lately...
"My contribution to the Art the Arms Fair exhibition, which opens opposite the world's biggest arms fair - held this week in London."
"Opened a gift shop today - situated at the back of the Walled Off hotel. Not to be confused with the 'Banksy shop' next door - which has nothing to do with me at all. Hand painted mini souvenir separation walls now available."
someone new in charge of the IG account maybe? but also that article from a few months back that sounded nothing like Banksy? having a gift shop with zero irony?

Your attention to these small changes is remarkable fed Didn't notice it but now as you mentioned it, I'm totally with you!

I have to agree with Fed. on this one.....the giftshop thing felt strange....total sellout now? But what really confused me was also the "MY contribution...." tell me that I'm wrong but that doesn't sound like the artist I didn't knew. Also the piece itself is awkwardly flat.....the statement is just too obvious imo.

Regarding the piece itself my thoughts are: I do like the mix of stik people and the realistic fire, it's not new I know. it was the same style at school painting earlier this year, but I really like it! Could be wrong but I think it's a unique style. I do like the play with the frame! Drones outside of the frame bombing the house inside the frame. I see that as an innuendo on the way how war is nowadays... Think you get what I mean. And I do like the simple way a very important and complex thing is shown to the viewer! Regarding your thoughts about the change in the way of writing about the art I think it might be possible that the man itself decided to take a little step out of the myth he created. Maybe he is still in control of what is happening and has a big influence on what and how it is going, but isn't the one who is really doing it. Remember the pieces in Paris and Calais? A lot of people have been sceptic if it was really done by banksy himself... We know that Banksy had always some helping hands on various projects, so maybe he just decided to get a little bit more "help" on his newer projects... Maybe he has other things to worry about in his private life but doesn't want to stop the impact the Banksy "brand" can have on peoples way of thinking. Only solution would be the thing I just described. Regarding the "sell out" through the new gift shop I think that the good cause is the main focus. and if thousands of people want to buy products manufactured in Palestine only because they are some how related to Banksy (even if he never touched or seen 99percent of those products) and all the money is going to palestine people this is a very good thing and a very clever move! And if you miss the play with the gift shop, you have to read the thread on uaa...plenty of greedy people flew straight to the hotel and spent a whole weekend at the reception waiting for the print and being mad pissed because the print wasn't available... All that is just my personal view/theory/guess and I'm happy to discuss or hear yours! Edit: writing all this in English took me nearly half an hour, so please be patient with my next post

(i could have chucked an R in there.. but .. i did us all a favour..) but.. they didn't ! keep it simple... stupid- a modus if evre there was .. and IS one. i hope caat get a pretty penny for it.. am sure mark thomas will be laughing is ers off. ..all ya mama .. eat your art out ... (the puns you could have with this are plenty..)

I think that whole gift shop operation has been a debacle poorly thought out and I'd suggest not aiding the longivety of a project that I'd assume banksy doesn't want to finish any time soon

i was chatting to the owner of the banksy shop next door the other day , and its no longer called 'the banksy shop' as he had been asked to change the name.
he is a nice guy, does the tours etc, quite the entrepreneur
I agree with Fed, somethings changed
As for the Civilian Drone strike, i really like it

Underwhelming to say the least. It doesn't even feel like a Banksy. I hope it sells for silly money either way as I'm assuming all proceeds will go to charity.

let's also not forget the election print debacle... using a crappy photoshopped GWB as the image for a "political statement" then copping-out at the end?
go back a bit further, and the multi-color GWB released around Dismaland? wtf
I'd even add the CYW release.... since when has B been a fan of colorways?
something's fishy

since when has B been a fan of colorways? something's fishy he's always utilised colour variants - soup cans, rats, i fought the law, flying copper, virgin mary, jack and jill, kate moss, morons, napalm, trolley hunters, nola, and weston super mare, just off the top of my head.

I get what you're saying, but most of those were A/P's or variants... CYW though was multiple color editions, onto which they kept adding more... dunno - just doesn't ring true to me. I could be wrong

I'd suggest banksy for the main only uses VIP print releases to aid with such things. But has clearly fallen out of love with the medium. Btw I really like the drone strike piece .

VIP releases to fund other stuff was always my understanding. Agains, good thing. Walled Off Hotel? An amazing fucking project. I reckon everyone's arse is nipping, completely unknown territory. Bits will go right, bits will go wrong, bits will be misunderstood etc etc. It's nice to just enjoy it, without worrying about 'getting a bit'...

One other thing - it is my opinion that Modern Toss are far more relevant week to week than Banksy.

not suggesting anything beyond, after following B for 10+, years something to me just feels "off"...don't know anyway else to describe it. especially the interview, IG account, and gift shop. also, Fragile leaving as for the GWB prints, yes I'm sure the money went to fund Dismaland, but don't forget about the private sales of canvases... it's not like there hasn't been a steady stream of income this whole time who knows... maybe I'm just jaded

Banksy. Not 'B'. Not 'Mr B'. Not 'The B Meister'. Not 'The Big Bad B'. Just Banksy. It's there, in his signature...
Don't forget, he's got a couple of houses, a couple of kids and a number of staff to support. Surprised he hasn't done a whole lot more to be honest...
