9pm tonight BBC 2 or iPlayer
Documentary, exploring the rise in profile of the output of American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, whose work is currently the subject of a large-scale exhibition at the Barbican in London - the first time a wholly Basquiat collection has been displayed in the UK. This film serves as a portrait of Jean-Michel's origins, making use of interviews with his sisters Lisane and Jeanine, along with accounts from his friends, confidants, lovers and contemporaries, to detail how a self-taught, Brooklyn-born artist came to rank alongside the likes of Picasso, de Kooning and Francis Bacon on the international art marketplace - 29 years after his death.

yeah, i'm looking forward to it.. quiet night in Enjoyed that... great insight. I would like to have heard from Blondie, Madonna in the film too, I also wish his work with RAMMELLZEE was documented in more detail. What/why was the Banksy Flower Thrower included in the background as his early collaborator painted their old SAMO© moniker?

finally got around to watching this and while I quite enjoyed it, a couple things should be cleared up.... first, the art establishment hated his work for a very long time.... he wasn't instantly recognized as a genius right from the start. everyone likes to say now that they knew his work was special from the get-go but that's bullshit. established artists for the most part thought his work was crap, including the Pop Artists who hadn't fled NYC yet
most of the money people were scared of graff, and thought seeing it around meant you were now living in a bad part of town. people were scared to be on a train if they saw it covered with tags, including SAMO. funny how all the art world luminaries tend to forget all that it wasnt until graff hit galleries did anyone take it seriously. and the people who were willing to put it in galleries were few and far between and for the most part not the people featured in this doc
last thing - all the graff dudes hated Fab Five Freddy and viewed him as a hanger-on and opportunist. when people started to assume he was part of the Fab 5 graff crew he was more than happy to not correct them

I like his pictures. This made me dislike the man, which made me wonder about the pictures. I questioned my lifelong love of Hockney when he drew a masthead for The Sun (a divisive, low rent tabloid in the UK) and professed his admiration for it. I was discussing this with a friend recently. I can tolerate hypocrisy in my rock stars because it's fantasy, make believe, escapism. Artists, novelists, well, they're trusted to tell the truth...

Totally agree with this Hockney comment, he's hardly short of a bob or two. Have gone right off of him since this. The Sun ffs! Perhaps do something for The Mail next. Cunt. The so-called honours list is the next table-turner for me. Goldie accepting an honour? Wtf? An honour with British Empire in it's name? What could be better? Sell outs please form an orderly queue. Feel free to look yourselves in the mirror. Aldous Huxley et al, you rock.
