think you mean museums, not galleries? but yes, more museums the better, but unfortunately more museums means separating an already stretched thin lot of masterpieces across more institutions... add on the fact that most museums can't afford to buy anything "new" that comes to market, and we're gonna fine museums that aren't up to par as to what they once were

I would have thought there'd be a pooling of resources between the two so to speak. It would be interesting to see how they'd classify which pieces too risqué to exhibit. The whole opening just smacks of another "cultural must have". The optimist would see this as an opportunity to gradually challenge taboos through Art, time will tell.

when it was first announced, the new Louvre was supposed to have the Winged Victory of Samothrace (Nike) as it's centerpiece... looks like that didn't happen yet, but can you imagine that piece being anywhere except at The Louvre in Paris? as Philippe de Montebello said - museums are part of their local culture and the museum's job is to hold it's pieces (which they consider public), in trust for the public to visit, in perpetuity
I mean fuck - remember what happened with the Barnes collection? Yes, more people can see it now, but it's completely out of context

Yep, agree with you there but seeing as most things in that city are bought in (as money is no object) the challenge in itself is how will this inception of the Louvre forge and define it's own identity...? over time is the short answer but it's going to face some serious challenges because of the conservative space it inhabits. It'll be interesting to see how it unfolds, there's certainly no shortage of relics from the rich cultural history of the region. How it blends/incorporates western art is the rub. Maybe they can start by sending back the winged bulls from Mesopotamia (and throw in Ingres's Turkish bath while they're at it

if you build it they will come.
no sorry i won't be - not unless some random flight i take lands there by mistake.
there is something , perhaps quite a lot of things - not entirely laudable about this.
we use your name - we pay you. we buy a lot of art.... we show it we pay some artists to come here... they'll attract press and we'll have a party...
no , not under any circumstances.

yobaby would not believe all you read in the Press especially Qatari press It will become one of the best Museums in the world It’s only restriction will be cock, tits, anti Muslim or pro other religions. Other than that will show whatever the curator wants. It will also be a good platform for Middle East leading artists and calligraphy based works Middle East collectors are some of the major collectors in the world. There is a very strong gallery scene and arts scene in the UAE one of the most if not the most art supportive governments in the region. Also one of the most socially integrated and one where women’s rights are are respected on a level not recognised in general across the region. Likewise other religions and places of worship are respected and allowed in the UAE. There are restrictions on religions Promotion etc. But the Abu Dhabi Louvre should be welcomed in a art market struggling to have more public access to the arts
