Tomorrow sees the opening of an East London art walk showcasing works by the likes of Damien Hirst and Anthony Gormley. Sophie Campbell offers her verdict It’s been a busy week for art handlers in East London’s Lower Lea Valley. Today, the last of eight new sculptures will be lowered into place on The Line, a new three-mile walking and cycling trail stretching from the Greenwich Peninsula to Stratford. One more work follows next week and two longstanding sculptures on the far side of the river near the O2 have joined in: a total of 11. And there are two more to come.
On Saturday May 23 everyone is invited to a grand opening at the old Cody Dock gasworks, now transformed into a delightful green space by five years of local volunteer labour. Cody Dock is celebrating in turn by throwing its gates open to the public every day for the first time. There will be free burgers, talks, walks, music and, with special permission from the Johnny Cash estate, a performance of I Walk The Line by Grammy-nominated singer Scott McFarnon. And all beneath the gaze of a Damien Hirst, newly installed on the riverbank.
