The name Alchema/Spectra is a reference to the experimental nature of Davids artistic process and his diverse use of colour.
The exhibition is a further investigation into the exclusive use of spray paint as a medium and its unique mark making capabilities, in what is essentially a new and evolving 'paint language' within contemporary portraiture.
"When I start my portraits I begin with a photograph as reference and thats as much as I know about the painting at that point, I choose my palette as I go along, certain colours somehow become necessary as do types of marks or feels. I don't do 'studies' so everything happens on the canvas, its all there - including the struggle. What holds my interest is discovery, I find the work in the act of the making. If I knew how my paintings where going to look like before I started them, I would never begin." DW
David Walker jumbles up the notion of traditional, free hand portraiture by using an urban contemporary medium. He vandalises his portraits by wiping out spray paint, dripping, or piercing the spray can so the paint spurts out on the canvas , often uncontrollably. He bestows his portraits with authority, although the people are just like you and me who, at some point of their lives, crossed the path of the artist and were captured for his archive.
In an era of Post Internet Art with the instant digital distribution of artworks, David Walker is able to create an on- and offline impact with his portraits on both canvas and with his monumental scale murals. He promotes the universal emotion of women with his unique artistic quality of beautiful chaos.
Currently residing in Berlin, David Walker has had solo exhibitions in London, Miami, New York and Paris and has been invited to paint murals at Wall Therapy New York, La Tour Paris 13 and The Cans 2 Festival London amongst many others.
