On Sunday, Shadi Alzaqzouq protested against the participation of three Isreal artists in the Dismaland exhibition. He wasn't told in advance that his paintings will be shown next to Israelian artists. To show his protest he covered his two paintings with a white sheet and a T-Shirt. On the white sheet he wrote: "R.I.P Gaza" and the black T-Shirt shows a simple Palestinian man in front of an Israeli IDF tank. This protest seemed to have angered Banksy who asked Shadi through the coordinator of the show to uncover his paintings or to take them off at all from the exhibition. Born from human principles, honest art needs to be always expressed in daily life, by the artist himself, so it can be credible and exemplary. I would have hoped that Shadi's covered paintings could remain in the show... It really questions me, what to think about Banksys art right now.

gotta say that this feels wrong. I understand not supporting a country you disagree with but not listening to what an artist from that country has to say just saddens me

Thanks for posting this Love, I'd be somewhat surprised if the pieces were not positioned in this way for a very specific reason - I don't suppose anyone has pictures of the pieces together and any info on the Israeli artists? It's quite clear Banksys stance on the gaze dispute so Id be interested to learn more.

She served in the Israeli army and paintings is about the evacuation of an illegal settlement in the West Bank in occupied Palestine. Is she sympathizing the settlers?

Banksy has done a lot of work in Isreail / Palestine

Thanks, perhaps it's a reflection of the the effect of this dispute on the powerless? And that they pay the price for those above? Would I say Israelis have suffered in a similar manner to Palestinians? No not even close, but there's a connection between the two people and sooner or later both sides will have to humanise the other.

All Israelis do national service. All squadddies could be ordered to get involved in iffy business. Need to consider this on a case I case basis. I do not imagine Banksy would actively enlist a pro settler zionist given his previous in Bethlehem and Gaza Sounds like the artist is being a prick and judging on a fellow artists nationality and not their work Probabaly easy to do if you are from the region but self defeating in context of a show in WSM

There are two sides to every story.
And on a more serious note : Perhaps they should try my suggestion about resolving issues with posting Kanye west faces to each other? ... That will lighten up the whole conflict i imagine....

Can it be argued that somebody associated with this show is willingly breaking the academic and cultural boycott of Israel? If so, can it be argued that the boycott has been broken justifiably in order to voice criticism? (I've not seen the Israeli piece(s) yet.)

I don't think the show is a monothought clique of po-faced left leaning cultural relativism free bloc, but neither do I think opportunistic antagonistic elements would be introduced to goad a reaction
I think Netas stuff is visually interesting ( urgh, just under "nice" as a bland comment). Its an alternate perspective on something we are inured to.
I have no idea of her political leanings or how/if they permeate the output. I am more than happy to view and ask the questions
This is probably all wrong of course.

An interesting update at the bottom of the article:
UPDATE: Al-Araby al-Jadeed has learnt that the organisers of Dismaland have not removed Shadi Alzaqzouq’s artwork as they said would happen and have instead kept his protest art up with a note saying, “The artist has decided to cover his work to protest being exhibited alongside artists from Israel. We are hoping to resolve the situation as soon as possible and apologise for any disappointment."

I am hesitant on this... Is the artist in on it? Or did the Banks manipulate the situation... Hmmm... Things that make you go hmmmm... Carry on.
