Guy Debords memoires book was bound in coarse sandpaper, to ensure it damaged other books it came into contact with [ Do you happen to be the lucky owner of one ? Absolute artistic, poetic and political masterpiece Debord is a great read for those who wonder "what happened to the street scene", in the 70s with "Societe du Spectacle" he laid out his theory that no sort of popular revolution was possible In societies based mostly on mass entertainment and lies, absorbing and diluting the effect of counter-culture.

You dont have to agree with it to realise its importance. any recommendations? www.marxists.org/reference/archive/debord/society.htmthis is his original stuff. a bit wordy, but y'know. plenty of E-Z entry stuff on the net if you get tired of his rehashing of kapital www.bopsecrets.org/SI/poverty.htmthis is more critical to the 68 going ons, , you may need to be aware ofthe acronyms he uses and the very french references / examples. You can reread a will self review of Spectacle here www.theguardian.com/books/2013/nov/14/guy-debord-society-spectacle-will-selfalthough I find self harder to digest than bloody jonathan meades as I used to advise, read this shit , dont get too mired in the language, just extract the the ideas and see how it emerged/ developed in response to events such as mai '68, or the paris massace of 200+ algerians in 61 or Charron in 62

Laz has a large collection of '68 uprising prints, fwiw... Yup. one of the biggest. its a pet area of his These prints are what got me into collecting. My father was a student in 68' in Paris, and very involved in the printing of these. I grew up in a house that had walls literally covered with these... I got into collecting prints by Cesar, Vasareli and others as a result, and the day I heard about Banksy I saw the may 68' spirit that i had grown up in... There was a great show at Beaubourg a few years ago where they had a ton of these

Mana Neyestani's 'An Iranian Metamorphosis'. (His work featured at Dismaland and provided the work featured on the back of the programme.) This is an autobiographical work in cartoon form (illustrated by Neyestani) that tells of his experiences at the hands of the Iranian authorities and his struggle to escape the country. Offers an interesting and compelling insight and, due to the fact that it's an illustrated book, doesn't take long to read.

You dont have to agree with it to realise its importance. remembering an age ago picking up a copy of VAGUE which was strewn with a large amount of debord / situationist stuff ala the spectacle - quite a read. (wee malc was in there as well i'm sure - he was a keen yin on all of it - think he was in paris in 68..) what ever happened to VAGUE - i think it was some kind of a cut up fanzine of sorts.

Gave up on "Infinite Jest"... Again. Now reading Carl Sandburg's "Abraham Lincoln", which in comparison is like reading fluff.

I recently read The kingkiller chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss and thoroughly recommend if you like your fantasy type books. Currently reading The Enchantress by James maxwell which is of similar ilk. Have read lots of good books recently in this genre but need to break it up and read something different next!

Just finished Robert Galbraith's 'Career of Evil'. My favourite of the 3 Cormoran Strike books so far. The story is gripping and i also enjoy the whole will they/won't they element to the series. I enjoy Rowling's style of writing and the occasional use of humour she employs. If you've never read any of this series, i'd certainly recommend giving it a go. Could be a great holiday read if you're planning on getting away from it all.

'The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate - Discoveries from a Secret World' by Peter Wohlleben. Great non-fiction book about trees. Absolutely fascinating and engaging, even if you already think trees are pretty bloody good, it teaches you loads more about them and explains some of the incredible things that they do. I shit you not, this book is the dog's bollocks.
