I painted this lion stencil, but the first 3 dark layers were damaged when spraying. Here it is next to the first version. Do you think the missing layers affect it too much, or is it still ok without them?

Love the whiskers on the right hand piece. Good work.

Really like the darkness of the left lion but need the whiskers from the right. imho Yeah perhaps I should spend a few hours cutting at least some of the darker details in. I like the darker one, but as I know what's missing from it, can't help but be drawn to the missing parts.

Do you think the missing layers affect it too much, or is it still ok without them? Amazing work – prefer the one on the right, a little more texture/brightness gives the image a lift. (Edit) just looked again... the darkness on the cheek (do lions have cheeks?) and under the chin really add an extra dimension. In short what mickeydread said

Not yet mate, I caught some sickness bug off of a colleague so i haven't cut the last layer yet I'm hoping to start cutting it tomorrow - then paint maybe Tuesday or Wednesday depending on how long it takes lol. Your lion looks awesome mate! Cheers, look forward to yours I paint each layer after cutting, I don't know how you hold off and resist These ones sure do take a long time to cut, lost count of how many hours I spent on the lion. I can believe it, so much amazing detail – how long do they take to complete (roughly)

Loving the stencil work aza and Opie, can only imagine the time spent, would be great to see some work in progress shots if available. fantastic work (why lions)? I used this lion just because I loved the photo. I have yet to create stencil from my own image, I really should get on to that but I keep getting drawn to photos I admire. Here are a few shots taken during the process:

Absolutely amazing Aza. I've got so many questions. Thanks for the process pics. What's the secret to mastering the overspray?

What happened to the Amateur Art Thread? I've been given my own thread...this is slightly embarrassing! Cheers though if you think I should have one, very flattering. I suppose I better do something original now

Absolutely amazing Aza. I've got so many questions. Thanks for the process pics. What's the secret to mastering the overspray? Just ask away if you have any questions What's the difference between overspray and underspray? Or is it the same thing? If you mean the paint getting under the stencil, then it's just a selection of weights. I'll take a photo later as I am spraying another layer so you can see what I use.

Looks good Aza. Prefer the tonal values on the oneon the right. Thanks zippy. Yeah that one is much better, unfortunately the 3 darkest stencils were so delicate that they were ruined in the spraying. These stencils were cut on 90gsm A1 paper, so are extremely flimsy. The thought of cutting those 3 layers out again filled me with dread.

Excellent work AzaHave you considered using Mylar sheets? Thanks mat. Not tried Mylar yet. I think the closest to that I have tried was laminated paper, but that ended up a bit too thick. I shall have to do a test with Mylar, would it run through a printer ok?

Definitely testing on the patience.

I shall have to do a test with Mylar, would it run through a printer ok? Great work Aza !! Really nice to see you are successfully mastering stencil art. The problem with less-thick paper is that it is hard to spray outside or on upright canvas. Do you spray flat or upright ?? Mylar paper is popular indeed. If you want a thin easy to cut paper, and cheap, consider trying these thin laminated pouches that are use to laminate document. It is thin but will last well with time; also there is a one side which is coated and smooth, and one side which is a bit sticky, so it is perfect to cut - chinahufeng.en.alibaba.com/product/494981539-50090738/Laminating_pouches_A4_125mic.htmlThe one with extra layer is better (especially at shin) but then quality is there so both are great ! Cheers

Cheers Thanks that's another option to try, although I am reluctant to start sticking together many small sheets, although I fear I may have to. Getting stuff printed at A1 is not cheap I spray flat at moment. I did try using laminated paper before, which I used spray adhesive to stick to the canvas, but that proved to be not very practical as I struggled to get it to lay flat on the canvas. That method worked fine on wood though, as it didn't have the flexibility of a canvas. It's all a learning curve really with plenty of trial and error.
