It's probably so the mud doesn't show up on them, so they don't look and feel so grubby, poor souls. I'm actually ashamed at myself for not trying to do something more to help. I know there are complex arguments around this situation and crisis, but these are human beings and indeed children we're talking about. It merits a human and a humane response.
