NYC Editions is pleased to present The Force is Shaken, an exhibition of new works by Massachusetts-based artist René Gagnon. This exhibition will be the artist’s first solo show with NYC Editions, featuring 13 original pieces displayed on the ground level of the gallery. Opening reception is Dec 16th 7-9pm Castor Gallery NYC
Much of Gagnon’s work derives from process art and pop-culture references. For this exhibition, the artist aims to merge the iconic imagery of the Star Wars films with the movie Beat Street, which focuses on the graffiti scene in the Bronx. Inspired by the costume design in the Star Wars films, Gagnon aimed to create unique pieces combining his love for the movies and street art. He achieved this by photographing over 200 scenes from each Star Wars film to create the backdrop for all his works, highlighting the helmets as the subject of each piece, all while using techniques more familiar to graffiti. The final products of this exhibition are colorfully collaged elements and screen-printed imagery. The artist’s goal was to capture each film in two artworks, and allow the viewer to closely inspect each piece and decipher which film it was referencing. The exhibition runs until 23 December 2015.
