Ollystudio is pleased to present the opening of East London's newest pop up artspace at 283 Kingsland Road. Doors will open to the public on Wednesday 23rd March 2016 at 6.30pm to celebrate the inaugural exhibition Hong Kong Connections — spotlighting the work of Hong Kong based Belgian street artist Caratoes and Chinese artist Pakal — on view through 17th April.
This month, Caratoes finished her two story mural on the facade of 283 Kingsland Road during a visit to London for the street art exhibition XX: A Moment in Time at Saatchi Gallery, curated by Ollystudio with support by Yasha Young of Urban Nation.
This marks only the beginning of what's planned for Ollystudio's first pop up as the façade of 283 Kingsland Road will periodically rotate, offering unique public wall space for artists in the heart of East London and overlooking the Regent’s Canal.
Founded by Olly Walker in 2005, Ollystudio has cultivated a reputation for curating strong shows and artistic collaborations for a range of clients, whether on artists’ projects or brand platforms. Having been responsible for the curation of a number of high profile gallery shows in London and Berlin or collaborations — including brands such as Levi’s Vintage Clothing, Converse, Orange and artists like The Clash, JR, John Gosling , William Orbit and the late, great Alexander McQueen — this is the very first time Ollystudio will open the doors to its own pop up artspace.
Caratoes considers herself as a space designer, who makes up original creations that enhance the beauty of the place, and delivers a precise message. She aims to produce environments that give a certain atmosphere or feeling, which can spark stories within the viewer's mind.
She has done worldwide projects and shows in locations like New York, Miami, Rome, San Francisco, Hawaii, and Singapore. During every trip she undertakes the task of refining her work. Caratoes has made artworks for clients such as the Four Seasons Hotel, Nike, DC shoes, UBS, Kangol, Coach, and Absolut Vodka.
Pakal is a London based artist, the alter ego of an established artist. It is an alternative expression - the introvert aspect of the artist. The anonymity of Pakal is an important part of the process, by not revealing origins or even gender, it removes any judgement and detaches comparison from the artists other work to letting the art remain its own autonomous context.
In doing so, the art comes directly as an expression of the interior world, the result of a visceral process, a spiritual exorcism, like an echo of the soul. Free from boundaries, borders, or labels to locate the creator in a time and a body, the artist also invites the viewer to find their own connections in the work.
Pakal’s uses of vivid colours and mixed media along with the mysterious background and connection with the Far East and Indigenous art of Central American add to the intrigue in the artwork.
