With the new polymer £5 notes coming in September and the rest to follow. Is this the end of art on British currency? I take it artists like Penny and other currency stencil artists won't be able to paint very well on these. Will they will just ditch the British ones and focus on other currencies.

I'd been wondering the same thing. Presumably there's going to be a work around, but it'd be interesting to hear of the technicalities involved. How do you prime a plastic note? Quick rub with sand paper? Wash it down with sugar soap?

I expect we will see tons of shit art being thrown out there on the new £5 too.

It has always surprised me that artists use current currency at all. Criminal offence to write or deface on banknotes. Its ok to burn them though.

As far as I know, no artist has ever been prosecuted for defacing banknotes. Can't imagine the Queen being too impressed with some of the dface notes.

The penalty is minor (small fine). Many old laws are still on the statute books that are not enforced.
I find the big deal over the new plastic fiver a bit weird. They've been used successfully in Oz for over twenty years.
