Never quite understood why anyone would buy an unsigned Banksy. However in todays auction at Sotheby's some one paid £11250 for an unsigned Gangsta Rat...... Love this print but .........WHY!!!!!!!!

I suspect most because buy unsigned Banksy prints because the signed ones are out of the reach. Regarding the unsigned Gansta rat I suspect the buyer has plenty of money and doesn't care.

gangsta rat purchasers think it is somehow more street than the other rats. baseball cap, chains - that's so fucking Compton
Compton.
Compton street not Compton LA.
I sold one of mine to a lawyer working in the city. As far distanced from the crack ridden streets of south central as you can imagine. The ongoing fetishment of someone elses poverty. the torturous drip of blood on the streets & grinding wasted futile lives.the mewling search of the provincial redbrick classes for a culture to appropriate. nothing sets off a Radlett semi better than a Banksy.Filling the empty expensively schooled void with artifacts of a far away land.
Nice decks woody, love the banksy. mix me some old school grooves.
Die you fucking cunts

Interesting. I dismissed it 10 years ago and thought it was silly as it reminded me too much of posers that dressed that way back when. Over time, I've really come to love that bugger and what I like most about it is that when you step back from it and visually take it in, the letters, the tail, the arrow and the feet work for my eyes in a very abstract manner. It takes on a life of its own physically apart from its message in a way that many Banksy's do not to my eyes. It's crept up on me over time (like the best art in any medium) and I enjoy the imagery more now than I ever have.

Why not? The print is made in the same fashion as the signed ones. Sure a signature will finish the piece completely, but taking in account that the unsigned print might cost 3k GBP and the same but signed edition will easily cost 10k+. Which would mean that the signature is worth more than the print itself. I rather have two great images on the wall than one signed one. But that is me. If you go for investment purpose only; Then buy signed and get a COA sorted asap.
