At the risk of preventing a firestorm of protest I'd like to wish everyone a Happy St George's Day. I'm aware that many feel patriotism is misplaced but I don't. Rampant, jingoistic, one eyed, racist, non-inclusive appropriation of the flag is something I most certainly don't subscribe to. But I'm proud to be English - I accept all our historic faults and failings as a nation (show me a country that's thousands of years old that doesn't have these and I'll eat one of my Banksys) and agree that more could be done to help certain sectors of our present society but, essentially, I'm an Englishman and I've as much right to be proud of that as have both other nationalities of their heritage and those within this country who don't share my enthusiasm. So… once again… Happy St George's Day - take it in the spirit that it's intended HB

Whilst I agree with you about the jingoism etc, amd have no problem with people being proud to be English, in the manner you describe Hubble, I just don't feel it. I feel lucky to have been born here, when one looks at the horrors, poverty, and strife other human beings suffer and endure in other countries. But that's all. No pride I'm afraid.

Mmmm but then again maybe you should be proud that you come from a country that believes in freedom of expression and allows you to openly express that.
That's really why you should really be proud it's the fact that your allowed not to be!!

And I do feel very lucky to live in this country, with all the benefits that brings, both in terms of freedoms, as you say, and in terms of wealth. But pride is something you either feel or you don't. Like faith (which I don't have either!). And I just don't feel it I'm afraid. It was a birthplace lottery as far as I'm concerned. It's perfectly arguable that I am a poorer person for it.

Jonny do you feel more patriotich being an expat? I'm Welsh and love Wales more now I am a citizen of Australia, when I was home I felt more like coach is describing, I was younger and naive back then maybe. I don't like what's happened to the UK with immigration, what a mess... I have been away 12 years and every time I come back it changes a lot. By the way stick your fucking St. George up your arse only kidding have a good day lads..

coach that's the point really your allowed to have no faith and no pride in the country and openly exspress it jeezuzjonessnr yes in many ways as you always miss home although not lived there for 20 odd years and no great plan to live there permanently again. Mind the other thing you see as you live and travel round the world are many of the things, freedoms that are good about the UK as well as those things that are a mess. You also gain a less polarized political view in that you don't have to be on one side or another etc So yes def proud of where I come from and it's good and bad things etc although not massively nationalistic otherwise wouldn't survive away and would go back etc Anyway enough from me on politics......have a good day all

I read somewhere that if you live in the UK and are on benefits you're in the top 5-10% richest people in the world, I wonder if you could measure happiness in some way where in the spectrum the UK and other "richer" nations would lie, I read a book by John Robbins "Healthy at 100" which is about 2 tribes (Vilcabambams and can'y remember the other) who have nothing in regards to monetary wealth/technology etc, they live long healthy lives, family and community is whats important, unlike in "developed" countries where the older you are the more of a burdan you become, with them the older you are the more important you are, the more respected. They have zero crime and very little health issues. It begs the question are richer countries really richer? Obviously in the monetary sense they are. Its a great book.

(I know its irrelevant to the point you were making, but I just wanted to say)
