I have recently been commissioned to make some large scale posters for a music festival in the UK. I need some advice on what materials to paint on. The posters will be hung inside a tent, but ideally I want them to be waterproof as they may have to spend some time outside, so paper is a no go. Normally I would just use primed MDF boards but transportation could be awkward due to the size and number of posters, so I want something that can be rolled. I have been doing some googling and came up with the idea of using PVC vinyl advertising banners (see below). My questions are has anyone had experience painting on these? Will the PVC accept acrylic spray-paint (I normally use mtn94 or Montana gold) or is it just going to peel off? Do I really need to prime it and if so should I just use gesso? Lastly will rolling it damage the painting? And if anyone has any other suggestions I am all ears. Cheers

No experience with painting on pvc vinyl banners. But I painted on vinyl records (like many others did too) and never had a problem with that... Not sure if that helps

I would approach a local printer and ask them what sort of process/ink they use on this material. Or use canvas, primed and sprayed.

I'd ask them how much to print it.
