kennardphillips: MAY NOT
7th June – 6th July
“Do not blame people and their attitudes: the problem is not corruption or greed, the problem is the system that pushes you to be corrupt. The solution is not, “Main Street, not Wall Street,” but to change the system where Main Street cannot function without Wall Street.”
Slavoj Zizek
Dadiani Fine Art is thrilled to present May Not – an exhibition by a political artist duo kennardphillipps. Cat Phillipps and Peter Kennard create photomontages that are both fervent and analytical in their opposition to war and corruption of power. This is an exhibition speaking to the current political climate and will open exactly two days before the General Election.
In May Not kennardphillipps create an installation of photomontages printed on Financial Times and blank newsprint propped up by a three – dimensional red graph snaking throughout the gallery and spiking up to the ceiling, extending the Forex charts into a physical manifestation. The artists take hold of this graph and connect it directly to images that reveal the oppression meted out by financial powerbrokers and a political elite.
“May Not is a montage of our attempt to get a grip, take the temperature, get a handle on the real, measure the trauma. It’s a partial, fragmented and insecure archive of how things are looking to us. Photos are cut and torn – the action is up front.
The freedom to make politically critical images is not one available to thousands of artists across the world. We want to use that space to engage with what is happening now and thereby encourage people that a different world is possible.”
It is precisely this privilege of immunity that often stills an otherwise rampant spirit when in a state of resistance; when the freedom of speech is curtailed, another kind of protest begins.
The private view will be held on Tuesday June 6th 6-9pm, the exhibition runs from 7th June-7th July.
