Question sounds stupid but I'm wondering how much money a gallery gets through a print release... Is there something like a normale rate? 70percent for the artist and 30percent for the gallery or something like that? Or is it different from artist to artist and gallery to gallery?

The deal structure can vary based on the demand of the artist
However 50/50 after cost is as usual starting point.
Particularly if the gallery is not only the retailer but also covering production costs, which for things that can't print on demand, have to come out up front.

No problem. I dont know why anyone would split with a gallery on a Giclee. You can effectively POD (print on demand) for that product. Unless someone has a really deep collector base / platform, you can functionally do this yourself. For screen, litho, etching, dye sublimation etc. You really need to have some cash in hand to handle production, as you cant really POD these items.

But if you are new to the business the support of a known gallery can help you a lot I guess. Some artists just aren't very good in advertising their selves too...

the cost of production for giclee is really low. depending on piece, yield etc, somwhere around $4 - $20 ($4 for 8.5x11.00 type size $20 for something large) while a gallery can likely help with distribution, i think a well employed IG and FB strategy (with the right image of course) can easily push 100 pieces without much struggle. galleries are an important piece of the equation for a lot of things and particularly when trying to sell a higher price point item ($50+),

It's common and the norm for a 50/50 split. The gallery has to cover alot of costs just to stay open, I know I've just opened one or depends how it goes

My focus is only on primary, dealing straight with the artists directly, its been a bit tricky getting people involved when you haven't got nothing to show (functioning gallery space) but slowly I'm getting there. Im been open for 7 weeks now and have got a few names you may recognise, love or hate their work, all the artists have been extremely helpful and luckily for me absolute top people. I will open a page right now, was a bit hesitant at first because nothing was finished but its all about set up now I've got a few meetings next week with a couple of street artists which I'm over the moon about as its the art i love the most. can't name them yet though. www.darkhousestudio.com

i sell some of my work through a publisher who then sell directly to the gallery's, unfortunately this means i only see a fraction of the retail price if anythings sold, however its fairly low risk for me, all i am investing is paint and the time creating the work. they cover framing, marketing, shipping and have far more contacts than i do at this point in time. hopefully when i Finnish my degree and establish myself i can cut out the middle man and take a larger cut.
