Tired of ending my posts with "sorry for the crappy cellphone pictures" so I'm shopping around for a nice digital camera.
I've limited knowledge when it comes to cameras so I'd be looking for a point-and-shoot, easy to use model. Would also prefer it to be compact. Few years back I had a Panasonic Lumix which worked great. Just asking around to see if anyone has other suggestions. As for budget, I'd prefer to keep it under $400.

I've been using the panasonic tz series for years matey. I dont actually have a SLR but have been reasonably happy with the results I post. Or buy a better phone cam.

still swear by my fuji X100 - a bit old now, i hear the latest iteration is a few shades better but also ..on the expensive side. pickup an old x100 or x100s on the bay - in black.. and you're away.

I use a Canon 550d but spec it up with L series lenses. But the body and the kit lens are great. Not sure if it fits into the price range you quoted though.

Canon 550d has the same chipset as the Canon Mark5, which we use for our videoclips and documentary shoots. Excellent camera. And if you could spare a little more go for the Canon 60D (bigger, more robust, with digital screen and is also fitted with the same chipset.

Very good people. Tas is asking about point & shoot compacts though. I meet many people with really nice cameras. They dont have them with them though.

br]I meet many people with really nice cameras. They dont have them with them though. LOL. So funny, from time to time I think about picking up an actual camera, the last one I had was a whopping 5MP from the days before phones had usable cameras it was a Leica Digilux although it took great pics (for the time) it was so damn bulky I never used it other than the occasional eBay sale.

The DSLR ca,eras intimidate me. I really just want something I can toss in my back pocket for shows. I'm going to look into the tz series as mikey mentioned. I've always had a Panasonic and they never let me down.

I use a mirrorless camera...Sony Alpha a6000. The size is somewhere in between a DSLR and a point and shoot, but closer to the size of a point and shoot with the photo quality of a DSLR. You can get a pretty good deal on them online right now.

Good to see you here shechtmr. Intrigued by the mirrorless series myself. Thanks for the welcome, glad to be here. The new-ish mirroloess sytems make for really great cameras...personally I think the future of photography. I bought one as I took my first trip to Europe from the US in February and really wanted to capture everything. I did a lot a research before hand and the a6000 has pretty amazing reviews. There is a great video put out by B&H where a professional photographer goes through all the features and teaches you how to use it etc.

Revisiting this post to update anyone who cares. shechtmr, I actually ended up buying the A6000. The funny thing is I hadn't seen your post until just now. Read a lot of reviews and watched a lot of youtube videos and the A6000 seemed to be a really good choice. Picked it up today. Looking forward to playing around with it. thanks everyone for all the suggestions/advice.
