Mausoleum of the Giants Solo Show by Phlegm
15 March – 6 April 2019 Sheffield UK
Sheffield invites you to Mausoleum of the Giants a solo show created by acclaimed artist Phlegm.
Mausoleum of the Giants - a monumental title fitting for a new spectacular sculptural installation showcase by artist Phlegm in his hometown of Sheffield, UK. The artist, Illustrator and cartoonist, who earned worldwide recognition with his intricate, narrative-rich murals painted on carefully selected public or abandoned structures, is continuing his exploration of mediums and scales and this time he’s gone big. After spending the last couple of years working on impossibly small copper engravings and ink drawings, he’s switched to creating larger than life sculptures as physical, 3D versions of his iconic characters.
Five years after his solo showcase, “The Bestiary” in Shoreditch London and two years since he last worked in the city, Sheffield’s adopted son has created work on a new, grander scale. Taking over the architecture with his murals and changing the entire field of view with his visuals, he has produced an incredible, immersive sculptural installation. Massive sculptures occupy halls, corridors and rooms of an abandoned factory with their cumbersome bodies. Mausoleum of the Giants is a thrilling extension of Phlegm’s ongoing efforts to intertwine his surreal and highly imaginative work with existing deteriorating structures.
Sheffield as the stage for this epic showcase was no accident. With local industrial buildings often forming the backdrop for his murals in the city, an old factory complex is the perfect location for presenting such a poetic and personal undertaking and bringing Phlegm's iconic characters to life. Imagined as beings whose life spans over thousands of years, these peaceful beasts have seen rivers erode and mountains change. With their final days coming slowly but surely, the giants are ready for their eternal rest, giving everyone enough time to meet them, mourn them and make peace with their ending.
The Sheffield venue location currently being kept under wraps will be revealed to all week commencing 11th March 2019 via the website www.mausoleumofthegiants.co.uk
The opening weekend takes place on:
Friday 15th March from 6pm to 9pm
Saturday 16th March 11am – 6pm
Sunday 17th March 11am - 5pm
Closed Mondays and Tuesdays the show will then be open to the public Wednesdays 20th March until Saturday 6th April 2019
