Mercedes Benz Sues Murals In The Market Artists Aiming To Set Dangerous Precedent Over Use of Public Art In Ad Campaign On March 29th, 2019, Mercedes Benz filed an intimidation lawsuit in Federal Court in Michigan against Jeff Soto, Dabls, Denial, and Maxx242, four beloved artists near and dear to us. Mercedes used their murals in an advertising campaign and has now allegedly asked the court to rule that their murals (and essentially any and all public art) can be used in advertising to sell their products, without payment, or even needing the artist's permission. If courts were to adopt Mercedes’ argument, it could be devastating to the artistic community who rely on their work to support themselves and their families. Public art has become an important and beautiful attraction in cities around the world. Mercedes' actions could scare artists into not wanting to make any artwork outdoors for fear that big companies will use and exploit their work without permission, and we must never let that happen. 1xRUN and Murals In The Market are dedicated to fighting against this type of oppression and we stand alongside the global artist community against Mercedes' bullying. They will probably just commission pieces to be used like all the album adverts in London that keep popping up so will take away artistic licence anyway, either way it's not great for the scene
