SKIP Gallery’s biggest exhibition to date, showing 14 skip artworks, including 9 new commissions at the monumental ‘festival of curation’ in Woolwich warehouse during Frieze week.
Monumental ‘festival of curation’ in Woolwich warehouse during Frieze week A monumental ‘festival of curation’ will take place in a North Woolwich warehouse during Frieze Week, when 10 UK based curators/curatorial groups will be invited to present exhibitions of sculpture, painting, drawing, video, performance and installation from emerging and mid-career artists.
Transforming an old Tate & Lyle Factory in the Thameside Industrial Estate, The Factory Project is an independent museum-scale display, showcasing work from over 80 artists. Organisers and co-curators Eric Thorp and Nicholas Stavri (Thorp Stavri) are presenting talks, workshops and tours to engage the local community with both the art and the building’s industrial past, and hope to connect with a wider audience than just regular gallery goers.
“We want to inspire local young people by connecting them directly with artists, and to bring something interesting, enjoyable and welcoming to people living in one of London's most underfunded boroughs,” says Eric Thorp, one half of Thorp Stavri. He continues, “The Thameside Industrial Estate has a long and rich history of serving the local community: we want to put it to community use once again.”
This inclusive approach applies across the project. Each of the curatorial groups invited to exhibit have no permanent bricks and mortar space, meaning The Factory Project offers them and the artists they are working with a rare opportunity – especially in London – to exhibit on a large scale in the 67,640 sq ft warehouse and yard complex. There’s an emphasis on diversity right across the project, giving real representation of creativity in the capital. Nicholas continues: “We want to create a platform that celebrates a diverse range of creative voices – emerging curators/artists of different ethnicities, genders and cultures – and connect them with a local audience that is more often than not, outside of the traditional gallery circuit. The health crisis and heightened awareness of inequalities in
the creative industries means that now more than ever we must address societal imbalances”
The Factory Project will take place at the monumental Thameside Industrial Estate, in North Woolwich, Newham – a short walk from London’s City Airport and nestled between the Tate & Lyle’s Sugar Refinery and the Thames Barrier
– on Factory Road. It is produced by Thorp Stavri and supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and through the continued support of Projekt and FAD Magazine.
• Skip Gallery will appear alongside 10 UK based curators/curatorial groups transforming an old Tate & Lyle Factory in the Thameside Industrial Estate.
• The Factory Project is an independent museum-scale display, showcasing work from

• Under the title 'Like It or Lump It (part 2)' SKIP Gallery will be showing 14 skips, including new commissions by an array of talented outliers who use humour to speak truths about society and human existence including Lucy Gregory, Michael Johansson, Ally Rosenberg, Dion Kitson, Holly & Faith, Gary Mansfield, Xu Yang , Hayden Kays and Esther Gamsu , with existing artworks by David Shrigley, Sarah Maple, Maja Djordjevic, Baker & Borowski and Paul Kindersley
• At the opening day visitors will also enjoy performances by Paul Kindersley, Darvish Fakhr and Xu Yang
SKIP Gallery founders, Lee Baker and Catherine Borowski, aka Baker & Borowski, are on a mission to break art out of its expected gallery context and implant it in unexpected environments. SKIP Gallery encourages – or perhaps coerces – the public to confront
each artwork head on and consider how its meaning might be influenced by its setting – discarded in a skip, rubbish in transit. So they were delighted to have been invited by curators Thorp Stavri to create a new exhibition, as part of The Factory Project; a huge show, offering a rare opportunity for itinerant galleries to exhibit on a large scale in the old Tate and Lyle warehouse complex. This will be SKIP Gallery’s largest and most ambitious art show to date.
.
Baker & Borowski have selected a culturally diverse array of emerging artists, rising stars and acclaimed contemporary artists to join them in the thought-provoking exhibition, that will present 14 skips, with 9 new commissions, each transformed into skip inspired artworks.
“Apart from looking forward to show alongside such fantastic, respected galleries, it’s a perfect environment for our skips to live in,” says Catherine Borowski. She continues, “in the past, we've shown one off skips in the street, and multiple skip shows inside warehouse
spaces, but The Factory show is a brilliant opportunity to create an uninterrupted skip pathway from outside in the courtyard to the factory itself. A journey featuring a survey of some of the most exciting artists working in Europe today.” SKIP
