I wouldn't call it payback necessarily, more like playing right into his hand. The press laps it up like some kind of controversy and the artist sits back, smiles and profits. I consider myself a larger critic than most when it comes to Prince but he's begging for a reaction and artnet is of course willing to take the bait. That series does little for me in terms of art (though even i can admit that some of his comments are hilarious under those photos) but I think it will do very well monetarily.

Quite right lee3 cannot see him complaining. Suppose what is also funny as they say theirs is using the same technique as him are they now actually producing a copy of his work rather than their own?? The wonderful world of art........it is shit sometimes???

First off I'm a big fan of Prince overall and a very big fan of this series. To me it shows the creepiness of Instagram. The outside voyeur who is clearly out of his element on a social networking app that is geared towards a different generation. The odd comments on the beautiful girls photos is exactly what a older kind of pervy guy would do hoping to illicit a response back. To me it sounds like the biggest issue is not that he's doing this (and I've seen other artists already copy this to an extent with zero reaction from the public) it's the price that people are paying for it. It's very simple. Richard Prince is a massive name in the contemporary art world with auction results and primary sales into the millions. I believe these were originally 40k usd before his first showing of them at gagosian and then jumped up to 90k depending on image. Wether you like it or not or wether you understand it or not is irrelevant. This is what he does and these are the prices he commands. This publicity is only making this series that much stronger which in turn raises the prices. One last thing that I never see brought up. He has offered an ap on canvas to anyone that he uses. I don't think their is a single image you couldn't quick sale for 50k usd. Take the print make some money and be happy you basically won the mini lotto this week. That is payment and considering Instagram probably owns the right to use your images for free not a bad option.
