Curious to hear people's opinions on 'real' (ie brick and mortal) galleries. I'm London based so most keen to hear about those I may not know about but obviously would love to learn about all of them
When I say interesting, I guess i mean galleries that aren't just hosting print shows or concentrate on more of the popular artists in the scene (thinking of places like Stolen Space). I used to enjoy Black Rat (for all its failings) but now the one I get most excited about is Howard Griffin Gallery.
Thought he went out on a limb with the George the Dog show and the book was great with that. Enjoyed the RUN and Pablo Delgado show. I know these aren't completely undiscovered artists but think Griffin goes out of his way to find artists who may not have had a solo london show yet and focus on them. Nelly Duff doesn't seem to do shows anymore, not sure why, but went to a couple nice ones there a ways back.
Would love to hear about others...

I wonder if there is a need for a permanent space anymore or if the Rexromoe pop-up is a more viable model? It's interesting that even The Outsiders have shut up shop and if they feel that a physical permanent space isn't needed it must be very hard for the smaller players to maintain theirs. Agree about HGG, they've really backed their artists and put on some superb shows.

HGG is a great gallery and how all galleries should be run. All about finding new talent and putting on exciting new shows not just hanging pictures in a space. It helps that Griff and all his staff are good people with a passion for art too.

Totally agreed with respect to HGG. Richard is a great guy, with the best of intentions. I wish more folks out there were like him.

They're using space (whether it's their own rented space for a year, two-weeks or whatever) in an interesting way to promote artists beyond just a print release.

Must say do love Elms Lester both in concept although only does Adam Neate but also really love it as a rather stunning space right in the centre of town. Lots of quirks like the hoist doors, tiny stairs etc.. Paul and Fiona there are always welcoming and have a real passion for what they do.
must say don't know many like HGG although did go to the Borondo show and thought it was excellent.
Being out here not often I meet the galleries I deal with in UK. Andy at Castle is a star but that's NI. Magda in Paris are also great.
Used to love Signal and Chris there always had cracking little shows always used to visit when back does anyone know what happened to it as not heard in a long time

Have to agree love what HGG is doing not only with the shows creating great experiences but like others mentioned standing behind artists they believe in and pushing them forward. I really think its the only way to maintain in this changing gallery scene as more Brick and Mortar shops shut down or downsize to small spaces.
The Borondo show was a good example of what can happen with Popup exhibitions and Media like Blogs or other entities start to cross over like myself from Blogging to curating. I always believed in Borondo I am glad he is getting his due. Its definetly a new model if done well will have its place amongst everything else.
As Far as My favorite spaces, Openspace Paris have a great vision and very good to work with, they also are moving into larger space so I expect some big things from them. Magda of course is an amazing space, and if you get to shanghai her space their is massive I have learned alot from my time with her and seeing what she has built. I think Rutkowski68 is a solid Gallery that is moving into a larger space as well with a big schedule planned. Also Library street collective have a great roster. So many top places and what I love is each doing things their own way creating a unique roster, not just another scheduled stop to some of todays most popular street artists.

I do miss Art-El and Recoat; the guys involved were all really passionate about what they did. In terms of galleries that are still going I would also mention: Galerie Itinerrance - I think Tour Paris 13 and Djerbahood have been two of the most interesting events of the last few years Galerie le Feuvre - as they have put on shows by some of my favourite artists - Alëxone, Invader, Stohead, Invaders, Katrin Fridriks - the list goes on Alice Gallery - although I preferred their roster of artists from when they started putting on shows they still work with an interesting and diverse group of artists Speerstra - they're just one of those galleries that have been supporting their artists for years and years and also putting on shows by old-school writers Kirk Gallery - they're a good connection for work by El Mac, Robert Proch and Sepe

Going to add Lawrence alkin Gallery to the discussion..it's a tiny space ( as expected for its central location) but i've enjoyed what has been put on recently. Dave White, Dave Walker and Tom french shows in particular..Had a look at the current donwood exhibition and although i don't find the book covers the most novel idea, the execution was spot on.

It was those american artists...kozyndan i think? I do like some of hte prints they have displayed and they're quite cheap, but would love for them to get back to doing shows.

They did the Tenderloin show and the car banger show in 2013. The tenderloin show was great but was only on for one evening.

Kinda of miss signal gallery. They had some good shows there and met some of you orrible lot there ? way back. Dale Grimshaws show, Rae, Guy Denning et Al and a pub next door. I also agree Howard Griffin put some on some good shows for new artists and established ones. Howard needs to smile every now and then. Stolen Space have done some good shows particular Dface disorder show in the old space and Roa in the new.

As you know dibbs45, no probs. I've done it myself & reckon its due to the naming of the gallery. So its Griffs fault.
