I think my hate stems from the abuse of power and the manipulation of gullibility and ignorance. I enjoyed graffiti art/street art/urban art/ whatevs as a young man. I had no talent so most of my spray painting was putting an ‘A’ in front of the ‘NF’ you would find on lots of walls in Yorkshire in the early 80’s. I’ve always had a problem with racism. Well, all the isms, really. Fast forward, CastleGallery NI bought into Banksy, gerrymandering the market, became an ‘expert’, (my arse) and then pretended they were a special, annointed reseller. Balls. It is my opinion that they are a bunch of chancers, charlatans and price hyping wankers. Then they produce some shit prints that they try and touch with ‘Banksy’ and naive people buy in to it. That fucking sucks massive arse. The fool next door has a site that is often economical with the actualité. Criticism is buried deep, deep down. I’ve been visiting there for approximately 13 years and the turnover of people who know this shit is massive. This Gonefello print grossed £60,000. That is a fucking huge sum of money. Shit drawing, 350 pieces of paper. Costs about £50. I hate it because they are charlatans. Parasites. Bottom feeders. all just my opinion, of course... |

It does seem that a lot of people buy gonefellow stuff as they think it has some connection to banksy, and it does seem like it is marketed that way. also it seems like some sort of club that people seem desperate to be a part of and that’s why his releases sell out. I think the show in London will reveal the tone and direction they're heading down. Will the public want an entire show of Lonely Farmer? Can you even fill an entire show with LF related artworks? Would an artist be sectionable or detained under some stalking law if they did? I'm not sure you could keep a humorous in-joke going as an art career (if that's even what GF is going for) but it's going to be interesting to see how the show goes. I'd personally be quite impressed to see an entire show of nothing but various Lonely Farmer related art. Just to see it done. I mean, Hockney did a show of nothing but his dogs. I bought the book, thinking 'This can't just all be his dogs can it?'
Anyway, an artist gets to make whatever they like (within reason), and we get to decide whether we buy it. It's a great system.
